Ode To Food
If food be the sustenance of the body and the soul;
Cook on.
If it takes the senses on a journey of awesome discovery;
surround me with herbs from the tropics, and
spices from the orient;
psyche me up with the aromas of cinnamon and cloves,
cumin and anis; of thyme and dill, mint and tarragon.
If it be the way to the heart of love;
envelope me with the musky perfume
of ntong, the African scent-leave; and
the tanginess of adusa, its spicy vibrant sister.
Let me be yoked to the heady fragrance of
smoked palm oil; and sooth with the calming
waters of rose flower, and vanilla essence.
If it be the harbinger of harmony;
Let me know the pleasures of the marrying of
the cumin and the coriander; the ginger and the garlic.
If food be the sustenance of the body and the soul;
Cook on.
